Educational Goals and Programmes

The Manifesto Studiorum contains a list of the courses available, their credits and the lectures schedule.

The School offers students a wide range of academic options, taking advantage of the multidisciplinary teaching staff and the availability of laboratories. Students might attend basic or advanced courses in all distinctive areas: from design technologies and software realisation, to hardware implementation technologies; from information elaboration methodologies, to infrastructures for their distribution in networks.
The programme consists of 180 credits. The credits are awarded by the Doctoral School Commission according to the following criteria:

  • Examinations passed
  • Tutor/advisor’s satisfactory assessment
  • External tutor’s satisfactory assessment.
  • Prototypes and publications published in magazines or presented in international conferences.
  • Certificates declaring the presentation of research results in international conferences.

Specialisations

The Doctorate develops research topics in three areas:

  • Computer Science
  • Electronics
  • Telecommunications.
Each area is further divided in the following topics.

Language

English is the official language of the programme.
Courses, written and oral examinations, as well as the thesis, are in English. English is the language of the Academic everyday life.

Individual Study Plan

Doctoral students are required to take 24 Course Credits during the first two academic years, with a required minimum of 15 Course Credits during the first year and 9 during the second year. Each of the following requirements has to be met:

  • During the first and second year, at least 12 Course Credits must be collected from ICT doctoral courses.
  • No more than 6 Course Credits can be earned from ICT advanced courses.
  • No more than 6 Course Credits can be earned from outside courses (courses attended abroad and CNIT courses).
Please refer to your tutor/advisor if you have any doubt about the adequacy of a course. Your study plan needs to be approved by your tutor/advisor; otherwise it has no official value.

Tutoring

At the start of the Doctoral Programme each doctoral student is assigned a tutor to supervise the course of his/her studies. The tutor is nominated by the members of the Doctoral School Committee, or may be nominated by those responsible for the research programmes within the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science or external bodies which finance Doctoral scholarships.

The tutor is responsible for the integration of the doctoral student regarding the research of the ICT International Doctoral School.

Within the month of April of the first year of study the doctoral student should present the request for assignment of an advisor to the Doctoral School Committee. The Doctoral School Committee then nominates an advisor for each student, after first checking if the advisor is available.

For the first year of study, the tutor and subsequently the advisor, assists the doctoral student, and ensure the work carried out as well as the student’s respect of the regulations and conduct since they are considered fundamental for the value of the ICT International Doctoral School and for scientific and professional growth of the doctoral students.

Upon request of the advisor a co-advisor may be nominated. The co-advisor works in assisting the advisor in carrying out his/her tasks providing extra scientific or technological knowledge. Furthermore, the co-advisor has the same rights and obligations as the advisor.

Doctoral Thesis examination

The Doctoral title is granted when students pass the final examination, which can be repeated only one time.

The exam will be given before the Examination Committee and consists in the public discussion of the dissertation. The Examination Committee is appointed by the Rector and consists of three members chosen among university tenured professors and researchers. At least two members must belong to Italian or foreign universities not participating in the Doctoral School and cannot be members of the Doctoral School Committee. The Committee can be enlarged by a maximum of two foreign or Italian experts selected from the universities and the public and private research centres.
